**   Pins 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 are pulled up with a 10K resistor and are used for home/limit functions.  Consult your software as to the type of switches needed. (N.O. or N.C. types). The actual function of these pins is determined in your CAM software.
*** Pins 1, 14, 16 and 17 are not pulled up and are available as needed. Our driver board plays no role other than to provide convenient access to these pins. Pins are made available via solder pads (P6). Nothing is done to these lines on the PRO board.

What power supply do I need?

We recommend at least 36 Volts DC, and 3 amps per stepper motor. For a 3 axis board, a 9 Amp supply minimum, for a 4 axis board, 12 amps minimum. Never exceed the rated input voltage for the HobbyCNC board.

Is a special cable required to connect to my PC?

Yes. This is VERY IMPORTANT. You MUST use a 25-Pin, M-F, all wires, wired straight through. This is typically (but not always) a parallel printer cable. We sell a 6 and 15 foot Parallel Printer Cable that is tested and works!

My PC doesn’t have a parallel port

You will need to get to the equivalent of a parallel port somehow to secure the required “Step and Direction” signals. There is more detail in the FAQ Options to a Parallel Port.

Do I need a heatsink?

A heatsink is always a good idea. And you should have a fan blowing across it also.

We STRONGLY recommend a heatsink with any motor over 2 amps.

Can I provide my own heatsink?

Sure! We recommend a minimum of 1/8″ thick, 2″ wide and 6.25″ long aluminum stock. Add a fan blowing across the heatsink.

We recommend installing the heatsink BEFORE you solder in the driver chips. See the video on Installing the heatsinks and driver chips.

Dimensions for making your own heatsink are in the build instructions and in the Heat Sink FAQ (link at the bottom).
