Do I need a heatsink?

A heatsink is always a good idea. And you should have a fan blowing across it also.

We STRONGLY recommend a heatsink with any motor over 2 amps.

Can I provide my own heatsink?

Sure! We recommend a minimum of 1/8″ thick, 2″ wide and 6.25″ long aluminum stock. Add a fan blowing across the heatsink.

We recommend installing the heatsink BEFORE you solder in the driver chips. See the video on Installing the heatsinks and driver chips.

Dimensions for making your own heatsink are in the build instructions and in the Heat Sink FAQ (link at the bottom).
